Raul Meel

[vc_column width=”1/2″]

RAUL MEEL (born in 1941) is a self-taught print, installation, painting and performance artist and concrete poet. Raul Meel represents the radical wing of 1960s – 1980s innovation in Estonian art and is known as the most renowned Estonian autodidact and outsider. Meel studied electrical engineering in the University of Technology (1959 – 64), technical background gave him a different perspective towards art. In 1968, when Meel joined the circle of experimenting artists, who tolerated his typewriter poems, he started to feel his affiliation to the Western avant-garde of the 1960s and 1970s. In a short period of time he became the best-known representative of Estonia’s neo-avant-garde, whose artistic languages engaged with minimalism and conceptualism, which in Soviet Union, was tried to prohibit by all means. Therefore it’s also possible to look his creation as a political discourse, which emphasizes the antagonistic confortation to the prevailing art system.

His desire to speak the same language with the Western art innovators meant the abnegation of the usual opportunities and signifiers, which had grew out from Estonian art system. His instruments of art were lacking in a common measure with the dominant system – in fact, he used the tools and methods which endangered the artistic traditions and elements of dominant discourse. A particularly radical influence came with the implementation of the principle of the series, which took the uniqueness of the art piece.

His decision to change the iconic imagery to text, which chopped the texture of the picture, turned out to be as unacceptable. It is not easy to describe the artistic discourse of Meel – it’s hybrid, covering various aspects of the avant-garde canon.

Meel was also the first Estonian artist who participated in the European exhibitions oriented to avant-garde artists and therfore deserved wider international recognition. When the social supervision couldn’t stop his actions as artist, they more vigorously took control of his public outputs. Meel lost the right to register as freelancer artist, he didn’t have the licence to participate in exhibithions, buy himself neccecary materials for artmaking or publish the scripts of his shape poetry. He couldn’t get visas to visit exhibitions where his works were exhibited and he were also left without the prize money, which he should have gotten. He lived a double life – he was an ordinary soviet servant and worked for twenty years 1962 – 1987 (exept three years which he spent in the army) as supplier for containers  of liquid substances at The design of the local Ministry of Industry, Technology and design institute of Estonian SSR.

Wage labor and stressful relations with the Art World couldn’t stop him building up his career as an artist and creating numerous artpieces.

Meel joined the direction of international shape poetry in 1968, when it had been reformed by the change of the paradigm and this trend oriented to the readers participation in the creation of interactive figure. The shape poetry was at it’s peak in the 1960s and this period of time was characterized by the marginalization of the proportions of traditional poetry and growth of the graphic design proportions. The shape poetry created in the 1960s is nowadays often compared with the logo of the corporations.

Raul Meel as a typewriter poetry author, does not recognize the typological boundaries. He immediately depleted the positions of the shape poetry and designed the multidude of variants in a way that he step by step worked trough the whole structural skelekton of the shape poetry. His typewriting poems cover all the known presentation practices. Such, which are based on random letters and what Meel used in creating rather loosely formalized abstractions. Meel can be compared to linguistics, who believes in the randomness in the formatation of words. [/vc_column]

[vc_column width=”1/2″]

Meelest kujunes lühikese ajavahemiku jooksul Eesti tuntuim neoavangardi esindaja, kelle kunstikeeled haakusid minimalismi ja kontseptualismiga, mida riigis, kuhu Eestis tollal kuulus, püüti kõigi vahenditega keelustada. Meele kunstidiskursust pole lihtne kirjeldada — see on hübriidne, hõlmates avangardkunsti kaanoni eri tahke.

8. mail 2014 kinkis Raul Meel Kumu kunstimuuseumis toimunud näituse „Raul Meel. Dialoogid lõpmatusega” avamisel muuseumile kõik näitusel väljas olevad kunstnikule kuuluvad teosed. Selline kingitus Eesti Kunstimuuseumile on esmakordne. [/vc_column]
